I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
– Psalm 40:1
Isn’t music magical?
All I have to read is
I waited patiently for the Lord
and BAM, time travel.
I’m back in high school,
U2 is singing their iconic song on the radio,
and I am encountering new and unexpected ways
to love God.
It is almost an out-of-body experience,
so real and true and good.
What is this mysterious phenomenon,
this music,
that it can send us flying across decades,
open our hearts,
access tears from nowhere,
and give us an embodied experience
of our former selves in a former time?
Today’s me
reaching across the years,
offering benediction
to my teenaged self listening raptly
to the song on the radio,
transported, transfixed.
Blessing that early stage of the journey
which has led me on a long, winding path
to today.
Praise be to God for music!
Only God
could have come up with something
that wonderful.
