… you make the gateways of the morning
and the evening shout for joy.
– Psalm 65: 8
I have a wee little job right now driving a wee little neighbor to daycare every morning, and right now the timing is aligning with sunrise, and so I can assure you that the psalmist is correct – the gateway of the morning does in fact shout with joy.
We know that children do this to us, and for heaven’s sake I have raised three, but it remains freshly miraculous to see the world through a child’s eyes and realize how amazing everything is.
I comment on or sing about everything I encounter, and he looks where I look and hears my descriptions, and the world is brand new and magical early in the morning.
“Look, I see a cloud!”
“Look, the sky is pink!!”
“Look at those birds!”
“Ooo, can you see that fog on the lake?”
And if we happen to pull up next to a cement mixer at a stoplight, well, our lives are complete. A beautiful morning and an enormous truck right there. We have seen all we need to see. We are feeling the joy.
We are all where we are and the world is what it is and yes there is despair but there is also joy in the morning breathing hope into our tired souls. The psalmist’s life was no more carefree than ours but they noticed what was lovely and wrote about it, and that helps us see what is lovely in our lives as well.
Thanks be to God!

Beautiful! Love that the story involved a cement mixer. One of my kids loved cement mixers too, but he called them rocketships. Which was kind of cool, to keep seeing so many rocketships in our town!

Oh my! That is lovely! What a sensitive responses to what WAS an ordinary morning. It is as if I had never seen morning even though it comes around day after day! Thank you! 😋

I love the pure joy of a young child. We have much to learn from them. Thank you for the reminder to notice the beauty around us. After coffee, of course. 🙂
